February 2022

Wow, a very busy meeting in February.  Christine has sent an email with all the information in it so I won't repeat it all here.

The fall Quilt Show planning is under way and we will have a cubicle for our display.  Something to note; is there is no size limit for our pieces  A Page From My Book.

It seems the tea bags are making their way back to us to be repurposed into greeting cards for sale at and to benefit Gallery Vertigo.

The Reflections display will be up at Gallery Vertigo in March and we are thinking of bringing a lunch to the meeting and then going over after to see the display.  Please let Christine know if this will work for you.

Shirley showed us the technique for the Vases quilt and the instructions are in the email.

Christine demonstrated the Braided Curves by Maria Shell.

Jeanette created her own button and has sent along instructions for that as well.

We are considering using one of the tea bag panels to display them at the Quilt Show.

Show and Tell

Cathy has been making paper origami butterflies from a kit and is planning on turning them into a mobile for her granddaughter.

Betty has been having a great time making buttons.

Sandie played with last month's demo's and also made some buttons.

Shirley had two examples of her improv work, a bicycle with a large multicoloured circle for the wheel and a vase quilt that she demonstrated later in the meeting.

Elisabeth had attended a monoprinting and screen printing course and brought some examples and explained the process.  She also has her own version of Hopscotch.

Christine  brought along her winter scene and a quilt using many of the techniques in Quilters Playtime.

Happy New Year! January 2022

We are delighted to welcome Betty back to QuArtz!

We met at Brigitte's clubhouse again, the weather and various other problems kept our numbers down but as usual it was a creative meeting.

Show and Tell

Betty brought along an apron her grandchildren had painted for her.  Sorry but no picture.

Brigitte, Elisabeth and Shirley have made some Dorset buttons.

Quilter's Playtime

For the next three months, the group will be exploring Improv and various techniques out of the Quilter's Playtime book.  This month, Sandie presented Hopscotch and Jeanette presented Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

Hopscotch

Hopscotch takes the traditional Courthouse Log Cabin Block and makes it wonky.  Hopscotch is a great game to get you started playing with fabric in preparation for improvisational quilt making.

1) Choose your colours:

Looked a little drab

A few spots of colour

2) Cut a piece (almost square) that has gentle angles with no perpendicular or parallel lines. Do not make the angles of the pieces too sharp.

3) Cut a right and left background piece adding some extra fabric for wiggle room. Then sew the pieces together. Iron towards the middle piece.  You have created an "unblock unit".

4) Rough cut a piece (log) for the bottom of the 'unblock unit', using a wallpaper cut. Trim up your unblock unit.  Match the edges of the log and unblock unit and sew them together. Press the seam allowance towards the log.

Trim up before joining

5) Continue making these log/unblock units and sewing them together until the Hopscotch piece is as big as you want.

You can incorporate this block into your quilt or maybe use it as a border.

Pin the Tail on the Donkey

The object of this game is to create active motion in your quilt with either inserted or freely dangling tails.

-Tails may be created in many shapes.

-The end can slant in either direction or they can be long and pointy.

-Some can be large at the top and small at the bottom. Some can be the other way around.

-You can layer two or three tails on top of each other.

-You can place in the middle of your quilt or have them dangling from the bottom.

-You can embellish them with beads.

-You can make them out of fabric, ribbon, a string of beads or macrame.

Improv sessions for February and March

The group agreed that we would do Christine's "Braided Curves" and Shirley's "Sliced Vases" in Feb.

We are looking for suggestions for the March meeting if anyone has anything that they would like to present.  Email your suggestions to Christine, please.

January Button

This month we painted buttons.

Jeanette has buttons for anyone who missed the meeting but here are the instructions in case you would like to make some on your own.

-I bought round wooden discs at the dollar store, Scattered Goods. They are about 2/3 inch across and come in packs of 24.

-Find a 2 holed button about the same size as the disc. If you look at the disc you'll see that one side looks like the top. Hold the button against the top and use a pencil to mark the two holes onto the disc.

-Hold the disc with pliers and drill out the two holes were the marks are. Use a very tiny drill bit.

-Lightly sand the back, front and side.

To paint the buttons:

-It's easier to paint the buttons if you put a pointy thing (like a skewer) through the hole and hold it by the skewer while you are painting the button.  Place the skewer into a glass while the paint dries.

-Put at least two base coats over the whole button (front, back and side)

-Decorate the button any way you wish.  If you are stumped - think dots!

Saturday, 18 December 2021

And it's December!

We met at Brigitte's clubhouse again and had a holiday themed meeting.

We talked about where to meet in the new year and it was decided that with the new variants going around we would stay at the clubhouse for the foreseeable future.  This can be revisited in the new year if need be.

Brigitte collected our accordion books and other examples of the works done by the members of Quartz to take to the guild for a display on Thursday.  Sandi and Christine were going to address the guild at the meeting.

Update:

Brigitte says the show of our work was very well received.  Sandi did a terrific job explaining what we do throughout the year and what we are working on this year. The works sent along were displayed at the front of the room and the membership was invited to come and look.  There were positive comments and some asked about where we meet.  At one point someone commented that the rules seem varied, Brigitte clarified that the only rule we have is 'there are no rules'.  Thank you so much for updating the guild on our group.

We had a lunch break and played some silly holiday games that Shirley brought along.  It was a very good get together and we all hope you have a Happy Holiday!

Jeanette brought along the book she is using for some of this season's ideas.  We are going to look at improv in January.

Jeanette also gave us a tutorial in Dorset Buttons and has done some wonderful samples to inspire!

Show and Tell

Shirley brought some of her postcards and a piece playing with circles.

Joan has been doing some dyeing, love those leaf prints and vibrant colours!

Sandi used a piece of hardwood for her stamp and double printed it on some previously dyed fabrics. She plans to stitch on the ginkgo leaves and also brought along a tassel made with her granddaughters.

Elisabeth played with a jelly roll and made two of the lovely little Christmas pins shown last time.

Linda was making mug rugs and playing with knitting.  She is using Arne and Carlos's techniques for Norwegian knitting patterns.  They are very popular these days, might have to check it out.

Christine had mixed results with foiling and wasn't pleased with the grey glue left on the fabric.  It seems it has a shelf life and this jar was past it.

Cath did some over-dyeing on previously sun dyed pieces and then stamped with metallic fabric paints.

Cathy has made a piece depicting the view from her house and referencing the events of 2021.  There is smoke, fire, masks and more in her landscape.  Now where is her wine glass?

Cathy also brought along a piece with hand made folk on it.  She is going to do some research to see if she can find instructions for making these.
