February

Hello again.  We had a fun meeting yesterday, filled with inspiration and laughter.

Cathy has confirmed the June talk by Gerry Marchand.  He will be at the meeting from 10 to 12 to talk about creativity and allegorical composition.

The Salmon Arm Arts Centre has an amazing exhibit on until March 23. Environments for Reading is a collection of sculpture enclosures by mixed media artists. There is an artist talk on Thursday February 15 from 2 to 3:30.

Jeanette gave us a wonderful presentation on Squares, Circles and Bowls.  She started with a paper box with circles cut out in the sides, clever girl to cover two idea's in one!

There was a fabric box with a variety of decorations on the side and even a post card inside.  Some bubbles on a table runner and a borrowed crochet bag with many 3D decorative elements.

This is the starting fabric for the box.

She also showed us a few articles from copies of Stitch magazine, and Embellish magazine that I can't add here due to copyright issues.  I am sure she would be willing to bring them again to see if you missed out this time.

But there is more.......

Square fabric bowl, it really glows!

Judith talked about making her Whispers piece.  Her challenge to herself was to use metallic thread.  With a great new Bernina 770 to work on she found that a thread stand and slower stitching made the work easy.  She really captured the dazzle of the Canada Day fireworks.

Show and Tell

We had lots of scroll's in progress and even one finished!  Nice work all!

Brigitte showed her french knots from last month.

Jeanette has a landscape in her scroll.

Jan is also telling a story with her scroll.

Suzanna showed another lovely large quilt, my apologies for the bad pictures. She also brought along an idea for a 3D tree using a spiral and a cone and explained her 'proof of concept' box using ribbons and sticks to make your pieces pop up.  Interesting ideas.

Shirley has been hand stitching up a storm and had a lovely variety of pieces for her scroll.  She is working on silk fabrics.

Cathy has finished the pop up book for her granddaughter, complete with an alligator!  She used the colour wheel as her inspiration for her scroll and has it finished.  Very beautiful work.  She also brought in her Encrusted piece to show how she used some of the stitches and the secret of using corn pads as a base for round embroidery designs.

Cath watched a Quilt Show video on making tree rings and gave it a try.  In a dull grey winter she decided to try the technique to make some cheerful flowers as well.

Lena had done a few more sections of her scroll.  Exquisite hand work here.

Linda has finished her Paint Chip Challenge for the guild.  Wonderful use of colour. She also had a work in progress scroll and a lovely little petit point to add to it.

Paint Chips

Joyce has gone beyond fibre to make some amazing Dungeon and Dragon pieces for her son.  She is using foam insulation as her base and with clay and paint (and some fibre if you look close) she has made these wonderful pieces for him.  My daughter is jealous!

I love how she made the water in this piece.

There is fibre in this one!

Shirley brought us our Embroidery stitch of the month, Kantha stitch.  It is a very traditional method originating in South East Asia.  It is often used to hold layers of fabric together to make a larger usable piece of cloth.  The layers are held together with many rows of running stitches.

The variety of patterns is endless but Shirley showed us wheel made of Kantha stitch than is very striking.  We all gave it a go, with only one stand out opting for a zig zag pattern instead.
