New and returning faces October 2021

 October 2021

We welcomed a new member, Joan and a returning member, Shirley.  Great to have you join our group.

There was a bit of housekeeping to do.

Starting with the call to artists for the annual Fibre Art Show at Gallery Veritgo in March 2022. This year's theme is 'Reflections'.  120" maximum perimeter.   https://www.galleryvertigo.com/Call.html

There is a Fibre Art Festival in Armstrong in February.  More information will be forwarded.

The Pentiction Guild is having a Fibre Art Show at the Pentiction Art Gallery, on until Nov 6.

November 18 is the Guild Library sale.

We had a few examples of dyeing to look at.

Linda brought some pieces she had indigo dyed with her home grown leaves.  In some she had used a mordant on the fabric and the resulting pieces were a green tone.  In others she did not mordant first and those turned out a lovely soft blue.

Cath had some solar dyeing on silk and cotton fabric, using Linda's dried flowers and a bit of vinegar in the water.

She also did some eco printing with the indigo leaves and a simmer.  When that did not produce any real colour she added some soda ash and simmered again.  This resulted in a purple colour on the silk fabric

We moved on to the discussion of Over dyeing.  There are so many ways to change your fabric.  Joan had a great piece of blue print she had rust dyed. Some of the suggestions are below:

Christine brought along a few examples of over dyeing she has done in the past.   This one she dyed the bright green and then accordion folded it and clamped it with clothes pins before dyeing it again with purple.  Nice result!

This one had the blue dye dropped on specific area's.

In this piece Christine made the whole piece and then lay it flat on a tray and only dyed certain parts. It looks like she added blue dye to red fabric and ended up with the purple.

Our challenge for next month is to Over Dye something.  You might want to save a piece of the original to show the difference.

Jeanette is doing a new twist on our usual JOLTZ,   BUTTONS!

This month she showed us how to tie a Monkey's Fist Knot and a smaller Toggle Knot.

Show and Tell

Elisabeth brought along three of her latest works.  The decorated circles use her solar dyed fabric as backgrounds.  The black and white is made from blocks off the free table at the Guild meeting.

Joan has done this wonderful portrait.  Very nice work!

Brigitte was playing with some wool strips, what a great colour combination!  She also brought along her hand sewn green book in it's finished form.  See last month's post for pictures of this amazing work.

Cath showed her piece, Circle of Friends.  Made with fused silk fusion on a plain black background.
