December meeting

We had a great meeting with lots of enthusiasm shown!  A bit chaotic at times but everyone was inspired and participating.

Brigitte treated us to Christmas cookies too.  Thanks so much, Brigitte.  They were very tasty.

Betty showed us her name in Chinese characters, it could be made into an interesting chop for signing your work.

Betty's post card challenge was a hit with quite a few lovely pieces to show.  Betty turned hers into an artist trading card sized key chain.  Elisabeth made a few gift tags.  And well, Sandie has been very busy and along with postcards brought along two pieces she did for a different challenge.  In that one she had 3 prompts, Red-Violet, Shape and Fracture It.  Well done everyone!

Symmetry

We did a recap of Symmetry so far.  Cathy will be back in January to move the discussion along.  These are from her workbook.

We decided that the Symmetry pieces for ArtWalk would be a 120 inch maximum circumference.

We were reminded that we are not limited to quilt blocks.  We can use neutrals to make a background, cut them up to make an image or......................?

Linda brought along her paper patterns.

A good source of inspiration!

Our January meeting is on the 14th and Brigitte is doing JOLTZ.

We do need more volunteers for the next few months.

If time allows we will play with some foiling at the January meeting.  Love shiny!

November meeting

Brrrr, not sure we were ready to wake up to snow but we managed a good turn out in spite of the cold damp day.

Joltz was done by Catherine this month.  We had to draw what was on the card we picked from a deck called Cards Against Humanity, and then the rest had the chance to guess what it was.  It was so much fun we did it twice!

We are considering changing the focus of our ArtWalk pieces to Symmetry.  Jeanette suggested that this would make a more cohesive display.  You can still use your Personalize It colours there.  We will talk about it again in December.

We are also thinking about the size of our ArtWalk pieces and suggestions are welcome, this will be decided at the next meeting.

Betty had a small challenge for us, make a Postcard or Artist Trading Card for an exchange in December.  Postcards are 4" x 6" and trading cards are 2.5" x 3.5".  There is no theme, the sky is the limit!

October Meeting

A good organizational meeting with lots of discussion on how our year is shaping up.

Brigitte has offered to bring along a large number of paint chips if you are having trouble finding some with your initials.

A reminder that CQA is doing the Postcard challenge again this year for the quilt show in Edmonton.

Information can be found at https://canadianquilter.com/quilted-postcard-challenge-2020/

Catherine brought in some of the postcards she purchased at the show in Vancouver in 2018.

The Gallery Vertigo annual fibre art show is in March and the theme is - Change.

Tonny was our guest today and came to see the results of her Analogous challenge.  She brought along her finished piece.

Sandi and Liz have works in progress to share.

Judith and Cath also brought along finished pieces.

We had some interesting show and tell from Liz.  She brought in a scarf she eco dyed in a workshop with India Flint and another scarf she made with some lonely fabric found at Maiwa.  Both beautiful!

Brigitte presented our first look at Symmetry.  You really had to be there as she did an excellent job that I will not be able to replicate here.  But here are pictures and the basics.

Most quilt blocks are symmetrical and can be divided equally.

Our task was to make an asymmetrical block by drawing 5 to 8 lines on a 2" square.  Lines could be straight or curved.  We marked the corners with numbers and indicated the top.  Then we made a mirror image of the block.  We are to colour them and copy them, make 16 of each.  Cut them out and play with different compositions.  If you have Electric Quilt you can make them on your computer and play with them there.

Brigitte's blocks and some print outs of her manipulating them on the computer in EQ.  You can see the mirror image blocks in the upper left.

That is your homework for the next meeting, to have your paper blocks ready.

Diversi-Tea

Vernon Silver Star Quilters Quilt Show

The Quartz display looked great and a lot of interested was generated.  Most seemed surprised that you could make art with used tea bags!

Well done all!
