June

We again started the meeting with a quote:  The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity."  Paul Cezanne

We had an interested visitor today, a warm welcome to Linda B.

Our article about the Trailblazing Women  in the Summer issue of Canadian Quilter Magazine is out and they did a lovely job.  Congrats to Linda W. for having her amazing quilt featured.  The quilts look great in the article and the feedback I have been getting is very positive.

We have moved the Home and Accordion Book reveal to the August meeting.  They are also to be shown at the VSSQ meeting in mid September.

We had some discussion on our challenge for next year and after presenting two options, a show of hands has us doing the Abstract/Representational challenge.  More information on it at the September meeting.  There will be a sign up sheet for those interested at the August and September meetings.

Next month we will be meeting at Shirley's house to do some shibori style dyeing outside.  There will be an email with information and directions before the meeting.

Show and Tell

A couple of Home challenges were shown but I will keep them until the final reveal in August when I post all of them.

Brigitte brought a page from her accordion book with her couronne embroidery.

Cathy had a variety of things to show us.  While the velvet she used for embossing is acetate/nylon blend she says the acetate/rayon blend is best.

Playing with bleeding tissue paper onto fabric.  She also left it outside in a light rain to see how it would change.  Lots of little water spots!

This one showed up better in the picture.

Accordion book

The beads were strung with dental floss.

Elisabeth brought in a fun mug she had on display at the Mugs of May event at the Vernon Arts Centre.

Deborah played with Inktense paint pan set on some upholstery fabric she was given.  Could be the start of a bag?

Jeanette has almost finished her accordion book and it is amazing!  Two different scenes down each side with some cheesecloth and fabric trees on the ends.

Bev has made a few different sized couronnes.  She also brought in her Home challenge for some suggestions on finishing.  It looks great so far!

Joan had her first handmade journal to show and did a lovely job.  She saved a batik butterfly that lost it's colour in the wash and turned it and a few more things into a great wall hanging.  She has also finished some Inktense pencil flowers.

Ella played with her couronnes all together in one sample.  She also brought in an older quilt that she had finished quilting after getting some tips and tricks from Endy.

Cath turned her couronne into a spider page for her accordion book and added one of her beaded flies to keep it company.

Rust Dyeing.

We played with rusty metal and some very tiny steel balls from my husband's sand blaster.  They rust up quickly and you can use stencils to make your pattern or just spread them out on the fabric.  Some of the ladies were using larger rusty pieces of metal but the process is the same.

Examples of steel ball rust through a stencil.

Examples

Brigitte used rusted fabric in this lovely art piece.

Bev has some very interesting pieces on her fabric.

They don't look like much yet but the rust is starting.....

These two were showing quite a lot of rust colour by the end of the meeting.  I am looking forward to seeing what everyone does with their fabric after the rust dyeing is complete.
