Spring is on it's way and the sun is shining!

There wasn't much housekeeping to go through but there were give aways for all.

Sandi had extra stamps on offer.  Elisabeth had two pots of small brushes, some of which will be saved for doing batik later in the year.  Bev found a great deal on brightly coloured embroidery floss to share.  Thank you to all. 

Christine found a nice bead shop in Victoria and shared the card for the store. No website but you can find them on Facebook.

Gallery Vertigo is working on their new space and will have a soft opening on April 2, with the Grand Opening on April 11.  New address is 2901 30th Avenue. Great to have them back downtown on the main street.

Whispers

Jeanette followed Christine and her lovely flower piece.  The debris on the ground under the flowers inspired Jeanette to use driftwood on her piece.  She used wire and beads to separate the wood and to hold the driftwood tree together.  

Cathy followed Joan, and used the canoe shape as a starting point on her work.  She found some leaves that had a similar shape and used those to design her piece.   She incorporated dotting on the leaves and globe, used cording for the spines of the leaves.  Karen Eckmeier's book Wiggles and Waves, Freeform Curves helped make the foreground with gentle curves and turned edges.

Sandi followed Bev, who had made the view through snorkel goggles.  Sandi decided on one of the beautiful views from an Italian vacation.  The water sparkles in the distance and there are bushes made with wash away stabilizer and the castle window forms the frame for the piece.

Show and Tell

Lena started us off with a great vase.  She used iron on interfacing to stiffen it and it going to try a few other ideas to see if she can get it to hold a final shape she likes.  Love the green with the black and white, always a wonderful combination!

Elisabeth made a small fob and finished her pop up Christmas Card.  She played with a marbling kit and had some lovely examples.  She has also finished a beautiful example of Ricky Tim's Convergence Quilt.

Bev had some macrame treasures from Thailand but they wandered off before I could get a picture, not surprising as one was a very mischievous looking monkey.   She also brought in a beautiful multi-coloured quilt.

Cathy had been inspired to select an image from a piece of fabric and then embroider on it.  the little green tree turned out well.

Judith showed her tree rings and a strip landscape she made.  The landscape is going to have a heron on it next time you see it.  She also showed a napkin with beautiful embroidery that is double sided with no knotting.  

Joyce continues to play around in the D&D world.  Most of these pieces she has had to paint, but what tiny details!

Endy showed us a wonderful reverse appliqué face with her usual beautiful quilting.

Christine had a Reliquary Box.     Reliquaries, the containers that house relics such as a bone chip or hair or a personal item, took on many forms throughout  the Middle Ages and were often crafted in homage to the martyr whose remains were within.  

3D Structures

Sandi talked to us about 3D structures and had a large variety of examples to help explain.   Pages 66 -83. in Exploring Dimensional Quilt Art.  

she showed us :

Platonic solids, shapes made from all the same pieces, as in a cube or the small triangle pieces.

                         :Archimedean solids, made with more than one shape.

                          :Crescents and a two piece orb.

A few suggestions for inspiration for your 3D piece.  I am sure there are a lot more too if you look around.

Embroidery

Sandi had missed last month but still had some ideas on using the French or Colonial knot in an interesting way.  Love the little cherry holding the button on!

Jeanette gave us this month's embroidery stitch, the Herringbone Stitch.
