We're Back! September 2021

 Hello again!  So nice to see most of you in person, and those who couldn't make it were missed.  It was a bit chilly outdoors but we had some interesting talk and show and tell.

Christine, Sandi and Jeanette have been busy putting together a program for the coming season.  The plan is to take a deeper look into some techniques we have touched on in the past.  We will start with Solar Dyeing.  

Elisabeth and Linda gave us some insight into the process they used and had some lovely fabric samples to show us.

       Linda did a few batches and had dried flowers for sale so we could try out some of her colours.

The idea for January to March is Improv.

April to June will be Recycle, Upcycle, and Repurpose.

Jeanette is going to introduce us to A Button a Month instead of doing the Joltz.  Looking forward to seeing what she comes up with!

As October 2022 is the VSSQ Quilt show we are doing a Challenge to display there.

There were 3 choices given and we voted on them, with the winner being:

There were no size restrictions given.

We will meet in October at Brigitte's clubhouse.  She will book it for the following two months as well. 

There was quite a bit of show and tell, great to see that even with the horrible smoky summer we had we can still be creative.

Sandi is making a retirement journal.

Elisabeth has a nature theme in her journal.  The cover is almost done.

Cath has done her journal with her parents on the cover and pages from various school works and music of theirs.  There are pages from her mother's high school chemistry notes.

Bags made from screen print fabrics purchased is Whitehorse, Yukon a few years ago.  Fireweed seemed quite appropriate to work with this summer.

A screen print of two of Dawson City, Yukon's most famous buildings.  Built on permafrost they have leaned into each other over the years of freezing and thawing.

Linda has made another wonderful journal full of interesting things.

Brigitte was concerned when the summer began that she had lost her creative mojo, but with all these wonderful pieces completed I would say she found it again!

Whew, that is a lot of wonderful work!  Well done everyone.

The Pentiction Guild is having a Fibre Art Exhibit at the Penticton Art Gallery from Sept 18 to Nov 6.  Well worth the trip down as they have a very creative group there.  Maybe get together with a friend and make a day of it?

VSSQ is having a quilt sale on October 30 this year.  Check with the guild for more details if you are interested in selling any.

Cathy

Cathy has done a whole quilt with the mandala dotting technique.  

First ironing onto freezer paper, then marking the grids using a template.  She selected her designs and colours and did a lot of beautiful dotting.

Finally the quilting was done and then finished.  Beautiful background fabric that sets off the mandala's so well.

Cathy sent along a picture of the two mandala's she has made with buttons.  The white one is made with her mother's buttons, what a wonderful memento to have!

Coldstream Park for July

In spite of the heat and smoke 8 of us made it to the park for our meeting this month.  Lovely to meet in person again!

We had a variety of show and tell, some based on last month's Mandala Dotting and some more general work.

Cathy had really gone to town with her dotting, doing everything from fabric and paper to some lovely paint pour dotted rocks.

 

Sandie has been making books, this one with a circle motif.  It is an accordion book with signatures in the valleys.  

Jeanette has finished her accordion book of birds, complete with a lovely soft fuzzy edge.  The back side of each bird has a tag naming the bird and showing a variety of artwork.

Jeanette also brought along some Dorset buttons she has made and is looking for feedback on the idea of a 'Button a Month' for the new season.  What do you all think? 

Linda gave us some instruction on her technique of making journals with large envelopes.  She was using fabrics in red, black and brown to represent the fires burning all around us now.  

We all started a book cover with a variety of themes, some in fabric and some in paper.  

A great way to use up some of those scraps!

 A Few Finished Projects

Here is a picture of my baby texture book for my new grandchild.  The fabrics used are satin, sequins, flannel, terry cloth, feathers, leather, minky, wool and vinyl.

Five years ago I made a small flower bouquet quilt in memory of my Dad, who passed away in 2011.  The black and white music note fabric is from a night shirt I made him in his last year.  The blue inner border is the ribbon colour for prostate cancer.

I made it in the style of Yvonne Porcella, a wonderful and colourful quilt artist and one of the founders of SAQA.

As I was working on making flowers from the varied techniques presented this year I thought of putting them together into another flower bouquet quilt in memory of my Mom.

My mother, Audrey, was 97 when she passed away in December 2020.  She had been struggling with dementia for many years, and in spite of fading mentally she was quite healthy.  But Covid 19 was just more than she could fight.

The thin purple border is the ribbon colour for dementia.
